People watching @ Wally World

I was in Walmart yesterday. had to use the restroom. so I go in and there are two ladies already in there. one in the stall, the other at the sinks...they're chatting away. I go into my stall and they're conversation soon changes to why they are in there. one of them is taking a pregnancy test. I'm thinking ok, fine. The other lady is giving her suggestions to make sure she is peeing on the stick correctly. Now I've taken plenty of these tests. Come on people - it's not that hard. She's going on about what if the stick says " nothing " I have to agree with her friend... you will have an answer. As she's leaving, thankfully, she washes her hands and is joking about parading around the store holding her "stick" until she gets her answer. atleast I hope she was joking ... I can just see them marching around Walmart holding it out like the baton leader in a marching band! Ahh, the things people do in public.

last day of March

march can't decide to go out as a lamb or a lion here. it's been spitting out a few snow flakes and then the sun peeks out for a while... for a couple of days now. we didn't get too much snow from the big storm last Thursday. about 6 inches. mostly it was the wind that made it terrible. P's school was closed on Thursday and Friday. So she has an extended spring break. Atleast my creek isn't flooding me out like up there in North Dakota! wow, that's a lot of water. my motorcycle battery came the other day. waiting for spring to finally decide to be and stay here. can't wait to get out and ride again.

Law of the Garbage Truck

One day I hopped in a taxi and we took off for the airport. We were driving in the right lane when suddenly a black car jumped out of a parking space right in front of us. My taxi driver slammed on his brakes, skidded, and missed the other car by just inches! The driver of the other car whipped his head around and started yelling at us. My taxi driver just smiled and waved at the guy. And I mean he was really friendly. So I asked, 'Why did you just do that? This guy almost ruined your car and sent us to the hospital!' This is when my taxi driver taught me what I now call, 'The Law of the Garbage Truck.'He explained that many people are like garbage trucks. They run around full of garbage, full of frustration, full of anger, and full of disappointment. As their garbage piles up, they need a place to dump it and sometimes they'll dump it on you. Don't take it personally. Just smile, wave, wish them well, and move on. Don't take their garbage and spread it to other people at work, at home, or on the streets. The bottom line is that successful people do not let garbage trucks take over their day. Life's too short to wake up in the morning with regrets, so...Love the people who treat you right. Pray for the ones who don't. Life is ten percent what you make it and ninety percent how you take it! Have a blessed, garbage-free day!

Happy St Patrick's Day

A carrot, an egg & a cup of coffee

A carrot, an egg, and a cup of coffee...You will never look at a cup of coffee the same way again.

A young woman went to her mother and told her about her life and how things were so hard for
her she did not know how she was going to make it and wanted to give up; she was tired of
fighting and struggling. It seemed as one problem was solved, a new one arose.

Her mother took her to the kitchen. She filled three pots with water and placed each on a high fire.
Soon the pots came to boil. In the first she placed carrots, in the second she placed eggs, and in
the last she placed ground coffee beans. She let them sit and boil; without saying a word.

In about twenty minutes she turned off the burners. She fished the carrots out and placed them
in a bowl. She pulled the eggs out and placed them in a bowl. Then she ladled the coffee out
and placed it in a bowl.

Turning to her daughter, she asked, "Tell me what you see."

"Carrots, eggs, and coffee," she replied.

Her mother brought her closer and asked her to feel the carrots. She did and noted that they
were soft. The mother then asked the daughter to take an egg and break it. After pulling off
the shell, she observed the hardboiled egg.

Finally, the mother asked the daughter to sip the coffee. The daughter smiled as she tasted its
rich aroma. The daughter then asked, "What does it mean, mother?"

Her mother explained that each of these objects had faced the same adversity: boiling water.
Each reacted differently. The carrot went in strong, hard, and unrelenting. However, after being
subjected to the boiling water, it softened and became weak. The egg had been fragile. Its thin
outer shell had protected its liquid interior, but after sitting through the boiling water, its inside
became hardened. The ground coffee beans were unique, however. After they were in the
boiling water, they had changed the water.

"Which are you?" she asked her daughter. "When adversity knocks on your door, how do you
respond? Are you a carrot, an egg or a coffee bean?"

Think of this: Which am I? Am I the carrot that seems strong, but with pain and adversity do I
wilt and become soft and lose my strength?

Am I the egg that starts with a malleable heart, but changes with the heat? Did I have a fluid
spirit, but after a death, a breakup, a financial hardship or some other trial, have I become hardened
and stiff? Does my shell look the same, but on the inside am I bitter and tough with a stiff spirit
and hardened heart?

Or am I like the coffee bean? The bean actually changes the hot water, the very circumstance that
brings the pain. When the water gets hot, it releases the fragrance and flavor. If you are like the
bean, when things are at their worst, you get better and change the situation around you. When the
hour is the darkest and trials are their greatest do you elevate yourself to another level? How do you
handle adversity? Are you a carrot, an egg or a coffee bean?

May you have enough happiness to make you sweet, enough trials to make you strong, enough
sorrow to keep you human and enough hope to make you happy.

The happiest of people don't necessarily have the best of everything; they just make the most
of everything that comes along their way. The brightest future will always be based on a forgotten
past; you can't go forward in life until you let go of your past failures and heartaches.

When you were born, you were crying and everyone around you was smiling. Live your life so
at the end, you're the one who is smiling and everyone around you is crying.

Senior Don Gato

remember this one from grade school?

Senior Don Gato

Oh, Senior Don Gato was a cat. On a high, red, roof Don Gato sat. He was there to read a letter, Meow, Meow, Meow
Where the reading light was better Meow, Meow, Meow.
Twas a love note for Don Gato.
I adore you, wrote the lady cat

Who was fluffy white and nice and fat. There was not a sweeter kitty,
Meow, Meow, Meow
In the country or the city, Meow, Meow, Meow.
And she said she'd wed Don Gato.
Oh, Don Gato jumped so happily! Then fell off the roof and broke his knee, Broke his ribs and all his whiskers, Meow, Meow, Meow

And his little Solar plexus, Meow, Meow, Meow.
Aye Carumba! cried Don Gato.
Oh, the doctors they came on the run Just to see if something could be done. And they held a consultation, Meow, Meow, Meow

About how to save their patient, Meow, Meow, Meow.
How to save Senior Don Gato.
But in spite of everything they tried, Poor Senior Don Gato up and died.

Oh, it wasn't very merry, Meow, Meow, Meow
Going to the cemetery, Meow, Meow, Meow
For the ending of Don Gato.
As the funeral passed the market square, Such a smell of fish was in the air!
As the smell of fish created, Meow, Meow, Meow, He became reanimated, Meow, Meow, Meow!He came back to life, Don Gato!

long cold winter

It's late fall and the Indians on a remote reservation in South Dakota asked their new chief if the coming winter was going to be cold or mild.
Since he was a chief in a modern society, he had never been taught the old secrets. When he looked at the sky, he couldn't tell what the winter was going to be like.
Nevertheless, to be on the safe side, he told his tribe that the winter was indeed going to be cold and that the members of the village should collect firewood to be prepared. But, being a practical leader, after several days, he got an idea. He went to the phone booth, called the National Weather Service and asked, 'Is the coming winter going to be cold ?'
'It looks like this winter is going to be quite cold,' the meteorologist at the weather service responded.
So the chief went back to his people and told them to collect even more firewood in order to be prepared
A week later, he called the National Weather Service again. 'Does it still look like it is going to be a very cold winter?'
'Yes,' the man at National Weather Service again replied, 'it's going to be a very cold winter.'
The chief again went back to his people and ordered them to collect every scrap of firewood they could find.
Two weeks later, the chief called the National Weather Service again. 'Are you absolutely sure that the winter is going to be very cold?'
'Absolutely,' the man replied. 'It's looking more and more like it is going to be one of the coldest winters we've ever seen.'
'How can you be so sure?' the chief asked.
The weatherman replied, 'The Indians are collecting firewood like crazy.'
Always remember this whenever you get advice from a government official!

Girl Scout campfire flashback

remember this song? ...

RUNNING BEAR (J.P. Richardson) Johnny Preston (Mercury , 1959)

On the banks of the river Stood Runnin' Bear, young Indian brave On the other side of the river Stood his lovely Indian maid Little White Dove was-a her name. Such a lovely sight to see, But their tribes fought with each other So their love could never be.

Runnin' Bear loved Little White Dove With a love big as the sky Runnin' Bear loved Little White Dove With a love that couldn't die

He couldn't swim the raging river 'Cause the river was too wide He couldn't reach Little White Dove Waiting on the other side. In the moonlight he could see her Throwing kisses 'cross the waves. Her little heart was beating faster Waiting there for her brave

Runnin' Bear loved Little White Dove With a love big as the sky Runnin' Bear loved Little White DoveWith a love that couldn't die

Runnin' Bear dove in the water Little White Dove did the same. And they swam out to each other Through the swirling stream they came As their hands touched and their lips met The ragin' river pulled them down. Now they'll always be together In that happy hunting ground.

Runnin' Bear loved Little White Dove With a love big as the sky Runnin' Bear loved Little White Dove With a love that couldn't die

New mexico is very friendly. We will be marking it on our list of potential retirement areas. went and got my hair cut at a local place. the guy that cut my hair was very informational. he's lived in the denver area and even in Hawaii. He said he loved the people of Hawaii and thought he'd never find anywhere else he wanted to put down "roots"... til he came to New Mexico. He's been here a few years now and loves it. And my hair cut turned out very nice too! I've always been interested in Native American histories and this state has a lot of history! we'll have to come back in the summer and explore more.

Cars vs. Computers

For all of us who feel only the deepest love and affection for the way computers have enhanced our lives, read on.
At a computer expo, Bill Gates reportedly compared the computer industry with the auto industry and stated "If GM had kept up with technology like the computer industry has, we would all be driving $25.00 cars that got 1,000 miles to the gallon.
In response to Bill’s comments, General Motors issued a press release stating:
If GM had developed technology like Microsoft, we would all be driving cars with the following characteristics:
1. For no reason whatsoever, your car would crash twice a day. 2. Every time they repainted the lines in the road, you would have to buy a new car. 3. Occasionally your car would die on the freeway for no reason. You would have to pull over to the side of the road, close all of the windows, shut off the car, restart it, and reopen the windows before you could continue. For some reason you would simply accept this. 4. Occasionally, executing a maneuver such as a left turn would cause your car to shut down and refuse to restart, in which case you would have to reinstall the engine. 5. Macintosh would make a car that was powered by the sun, was reliable, five times as fast and twice as easy to drive - but would run on only five percent of the roads. 6. The oil, water temperature, and alternator warning lights would all be replaced by a single "General Protection Fault" warning light. 7. The airbag system would ask "Are you sure?" before deploying. 8. Occasionally, for no reason whatsoever, your car would lock you out and refuse to let you in until you simultaneously lifted the door handle, turned the key, and grabbed hold of the radio antenna. 9. Every time GM introduced a new car, car buyers would have to learn to drive all over again because none of the controls would operate in the same manner as the old car. 10. You’d have to press the "Start" button to turn the engine off.

Winter Road

Went for a ride looking for a hiking trail that didn't require skis or snowshoes. Didn't find one. But, the drive was nice. At the top of the road is a campground that is closed for the winter. There was quite a bit of snow there.. and the road isn't plowed up here. just the few brave souls and the sun are clearing the snow out. Thankfully, we didn't get stuck and four wheel drive was working nicely. All and all, a good end to the 2008 year.

Charlie's Wheel

We all went for a walk along the river walk today. the weather

this week has been nice and warm. In the 50's and sunny.

sectoral heterochromia

I was concerned about a new movie trailer I saw on TV recently.. "The Unborn". It's about a girl who has two different colored eyes. She finds out that she was a twin and the other baby died in the womb. Now the unborn brother she never new is out to haunt her and get his revenge. Well, as those who know me, also know I have multi colored eyes too! So I did some research. No I am not a twin. But, It is hereditary. So from this I am safe from haunting. When I was in grade school I used to tell the kids that picked on my eye color that I was a witch and not to make me mad. Or I would go out into the woods on the next full moon and cast a spell over them. lol! It was fun while it lasted.

So, by definition - what I have is called Heterochromia, A condition in which the two irises of an individual have different colors, or in which one iris has two colors. The Partial Heterochromia that I have is rarer. Most people like husky dogs, cats and horses have one eye that is say blue and the other is brown. I get to be a mixed up mess, lol!

NONPARTISAN JOKE

THIS IS A NONPARTISAN JOKE THAT CAN BE ENJOYED BY BOTH PARTIES! NOT ONLY THAT-- it is POLITICALLY CORRECT!!

While walking down the street one day a US senator is tragically hit by a truck and dies. His soul arrives in heaven and is met by St. Peter at the entrance.'Welcome to heaven,' says St. Peter. 'Before you settle in, it seems there is a problem. We seldom see a high official around these parts, you see, so we're not sure what to do with you.''No problem, just let me in,' says the man.'Well, I'd like to, but I have orders from higher up. What we'll do is have you spend one day in hell and one in heaven. Then you can choose where to spend eternity.''Really, I've made up my mind. I want to be in heaven,' says the senator.'I'm sorry, but we have our rules.'And with that, St. Peter escorts him to the elevator and he goes down, down, down to hell. The doors open and he finds himself in the middle of a green golf course. In the distance is a clubhouse and standing in front of it are all his friends and other politicians who had worked with him.Everyone is very happy and in evening dress. They run to greet him, shake his hand, and reminisce about the good times they had while getting rich at the expense of the people. They play a friendly game of golf and then dine on lobster, caviar and champagne. Also present is the devil, who really is a very friendly guy who has a good time dancing and telling jokes. They are having such a good time that before he realizes it, it is time to go.Everyone gives him a hearty farewell and waves while the elevator rises...The elevator goes up, up, up and the door reopens on heaven where St. Peter is waiting for him.'Now it's time to visit heaven.'So, 24 hours pass with the senator joining a group of contented souls moving from cloud to cloud, playing the harp and singing. They have a good time and, before he realizes it, the 24 hours have gone by and St. Peter returns.'Well, then, you've spent a day in hell and another in heaven. Now choose your eternity.'The senator reflects for a minute, then he answers: 'Well, I would never have said it before, I mean heaven has been delightful, but I think I would be better off in hell.'So St. Peter escorts him to the elevator and he goes down, down, down to hell. Now the doors of the elevator open and he's in the middle of a barren land covered with waste and garbage. He sees all his friends, dressed in rags, picking up the trash and putting it in black bags as more trash falls from above. The devil comes over to him and puts his arm around his shoulder. 'I don't understand,' stammers the senator. 'Yesterday I was here and there was a golf course and clubhouse, and we ate lobster and caviar, drank champagne, and danced and had a great time. Now there's just a wasteland full of garbage and my friends look miserable. What happened?'The devil looks at him, smiles and says, 'Yesterday we were campaigning.. . today you voted.'

unmarked police cars... *77

An UNMARKED police car pulled up behind her and put his lights on. Lauren's parents have always told her never to pull over for an unmarked car on the side of the road, but rather to wait until they get to a gas station, etc. Lauren had actually listened to her parents advice, and promptly called *77 on her cell phone to tell the police dispatcher that she would not pull over right away. She proceeded to tell the dispatcher that there was an unmarked police car with a flashing red light on his rooftop behind her. The dispatcher checked to see if there were police cars where she was and there weren't, and he told her to keep driving, remain calm and that he had back up already on the way. Ten minutes later 4 cop cars surrounded her and the unmarked car behind her. One policeman went to her side and the others surrounded the car behind. They pulled the guy from the car and tackled him to the ground. The man was a convicted rapist and wanted for other crimes. I never knew about the *77 Cell Phone Feature, but especially for a woman alone in a car, you should not pull over for an unmarked car. Apparently police have to respect your right to keep going to a safe place. *Speaking to a service representative at ** Bell ** Mobility confirmed that *77 was a direct link to State trooper info. So, now it's your turn to let your friends know about *77. ...This applies to ALL 50 states.

Thoughts for the week...

Your life is your canvas.....all you need is some paint!!!!!
Marriage changes passion. Suddenly you're in bed with a relative.
I saw a woman wearing a sweat shirt with 'Guess' on it. So I said 'Implants?' She hit me.
How come we choose from just two people to run for president and over fifty for Miss America ?
Now that food has replaced sex in my life, I can't even get into my own pants.
I signed up for an exercise class and was told to wear loose fitting clothing. If I HAD any loose fitting clothing, I wouldn't have signed up in the first place!
When I was young we used to go 'skinny dipping,' now I just 'chunky dunk.'
Don't argue with an idiot; people watching may not be able to tell the difference.
Wouldn't it be nice if whenever we messed up our life we could simply press 'Ctrl Alt Delete' and start all over? AMEN, AMEN !!
Why is it that our children can't read a Bible in school, but they can in prison?
Why do I have to swear on the Bible in court when the Ten Commandments cannot be displayed outside?
Bumper sticker of the year: 'If you can read this, thank a teacher -and, since it's in English, thank a soldier'
life is like a roll of toilet paper. The closer it gets to the end, the faster it goes.

what was this guy thinking!

Last weekend I saw something at Larry's Pistol & PawnShop that sparked my interest. The occasion was our22nd anniversary and I was looking for a littlesomething extra for my wife Toni. What I came acrosswas a 100,000-volt, pocket/purse-sized tazer.Theeffects of the tazer were suppose to be short lived, with no long-term adverse affect on your Assailant, allowing her adequate time to retreat to safety....WAY TOO COOL! Long story short, I bought the device and brought it home.I loaded two AAA batteries in the darn thing and pushed the button. Nothing! I was disappointed.I learned, however, that if I pushed the button AND pressed it against a metal surface at the same time; I'd get the blue arch of electricity darting back and forth between the prongs. Awesome!!! Unfortunately, I have yet to explain to Toni what that burn spot is on the face of her microwave.Okay, so I was home alone with this new toy, thinking to myself that it couldn't be all that bad with only two triple-a batteries, right? There I sat in my recliner, my cat Gracie looking on intently (trusting little soul) while I was reading the directions and thinking that I really needed to try this thing out on a flesh & blood moving target. I must admit I thought about zapping Gracie (for afraction of A second) and thought better of it.She is such a sweet cat. But, if I was going to give thisthing to my wife to protect herself against a mugger, I did want some assurance that it would work as advertised. Am I wrong? So, there I sat in a pair of shorts and a tank top with my reading glasses perched delicately on the bridge of my nose, directions in one hand, tazer in another. The directions said that a one-second burst would shock and disorient your assailant; a two-second burst was supposed to cause muscle spasms and a major loss of bodily control; a Three-second burst would purportedly make your assailant flop on the groundlike a fish out of water. Any burst longer than three seconds would be wasting the batteries. All the while I'm looking at this little device measuring about 5" long, less than 3/4 inch in circumference; pretty cute really and loaded with two itsy, bitsy triple-a batteries) thinking to myself, "no possible way! "What happened next is almost beyond description, but I'll do my best.....I'm sitting there alone, Gracie looking on with her head cocked to one side as to say, "don't do it master," reasoning that a one-secondburst from such a tiny little ole thing couldn't hurt all that bad....I decided to give myself a one-second burst just for the heck of it. I touched the prongs to my naked thigh, pushed the button, and HOLY MOTHER, WEAPONS OF MASS DESTRUCTION @! @$$!%!@*!!! I'm pretty sure Jessie Ventura ran in through the sidedoor, picked me up in the recliner, and then body slammed us both on the carpet, over and over and over again.I vaguely recall waking up on my side in the fetal position, with tears in my eyes, body soaking wet, both nipples on fire, testicles no where to be found, with my left arm tucked under my body in the oddest position, and tingling in my legs. The cat was standing over me making meowing sounds I had never heard before, licking my face, undoubtedly thinking to herself, "do it again, please do it again! "Note: If you ever feel compelled to "mug" yourself with a tazer, one note of caution: there is no such thing as a one-second burst when you zap yourself. You will not let go of that thing until it is dislodged from your hand by a violent thrashing about on the floor. A three second burst would be considered conservative.SON-OF-A-...that hurt like hell!!! A minute or so later (I can't be sure, as time was a relative thingat that point), collected my wits (what little I hadleft), sat up and surveyed the landscape. My bent reading glasses were on the mantle of the fireplace. How did they up get there??? My triceps, right thigh and both nipples were still twitching. My face felt like it had been shot up with Novocain, and my bottomlip weighed 88 lbs.I'm still looking for my testicles? I'm offering asignificant reward for their safe return. Still in shock, Tommy

fun facts

Did you know? In George Washington's days, there were no cameras. One's image was either sculpted or painted. Some paintings of George Washington showed him standing behind a desk with one arm behind his back while others showed both legs and both arms. Prices charged by painters were not based on how many people were to be painted, but by how many limbs were to be painted. Arms and legs are "limbs," therefore painting them would cost the buyer more. Hence the expression. "Okay, but it'll cost you an arm and a leg."

As incredible as it sounds, men and women took baths only twice a year! (May and October) Women kept their hair covered, while men shaved their heads (because of lice and bugs) and wore wigs. Wealthy men could afford good wigs made from wool. The wigs couldn't be washed, so to clean them they could carve out a loaf of bread, put the wig in the shell, and bake it for 30 minutes. The heat would make the wig big and fluffy, hence the term "big wig." Today we often use the term "here comes the Big Wig" because someone appears to be or is powerful and wealthy.

Common entertainment included playing cards. However, there was a tax levied when purchasing playing cards but only applicable to the "ace of Spades." To avoid paying the tax, people would purchase 51 cards instead. Yet, since most games require 52 cards, these people were thought to be stupid or dumb because they weren't "playing with a full deck."

This is to show how stupid we have become!

ten commandments

DID YOU KNOW?
As you walk up the steps to the building which houses the U.S Supreme Court you can see near the top of the building a row of the world's law givers and each one is facing one in the middle who is facing forward with a full frontal view ... It is Moses and he is holding the Ten Commandments!
As you enter the Supreme Court courtroom, the two huge oak doors have the Ten Commandments engraved on each lower portion of each door.
As you sit inside the courtroom, you can see the wall, right above where the Supreme Court Judges sit, a display of the Ten Commandments!
There are Bible verses etched in stone all over the Federal Buildings and Monuments in Washington , D.C.
Every session of Congress begins with a prayer by a paid preacher, whose salary has been paid by the taxpayer since 1777.
It is said that 86% of Americans believe in God. Therefore, it is very hard to understand why there is such a mess about having the Ten Commandments on display or 'In God We Trust' on our money and having God in the Pledge of Allegiance. Why don't we just tell the other 14% to Sit Down and SHUT UP!!!

Leadville Latrine

look! a two seater outhouse! I don't even want to imagine!

fall colors

it was insane how yellow the aspens looked today. there were scattered showers so the sun wasn't always luminating the aspens... but they still shine with a light of their own!

Gilman Colorado

the colors are peaking out here. lots of vibrant yellows and oranges. Went to the beautiful Leadville area. took pictures of the ghost town of Gilman. It was founded in 1886 and a fire destroyed it in 1899. but they rebuilt and millions in zinc and lead were mined through the 1950's. The town was abandoned and closed to the public while being cleared of mining pollutants in 1984.

friendly forest friends

he's sooo cute. 'specially since he isn't throwing pine cones at me!

Red Marble

I was at the corner grocery store buying some early potatoes. I noticed a small boy, delicate of bone and feature, ragged but clean, hungrily apprizing a basket of freshly picked green peas. I paid for my potatoes, but was also drawn to the display of fresh green peas. I am a pushover for creamed peas and new potatoes. Pondering the peas, I couldn't help overhearing the conversation between Mr. Miller (the store owner) and the ragged boy next to me. ; 'Hello Barry, how are you today?' 'H'lo, Mr. Miller. Fine, thank ya. Jus' admirin' them peas. They sure look good.' 'They are good, Barry. How's your Ma?' 'Fine. Gittin' stronger alla' time.' 'Good. Anything I can help you with?' 'No, Sir. Jus' admirin' them peas.' 'Would you like take some home?' asked Mr. Miller. 'No, Sir. Got nuthin' to pay for 'em with.' 'Well, what have you to trade me for some of those peas?' 'All I got's my prize marble here.' 'Is that right? Let me see it' said Miller. 'Here 'tis. She's a dandy.' 'I can see that. Hmmmmm, only thing is this one is blue and I sort of go for red. Do you have a red one like this at home?' the store owner asked. 'Not zackley but almost.' 'Tell you what. Take this sack of peas home with you and next trip this way let me look at that red marble', Mr. Miller told the boy. 'Sure will. Thanks Mr. Miller.' Mrs. Miller, who had been standing nearby, came over to help me. ;With a smile said, 'There are two other boys like him in our community, all three are in very poor circumstances. Jim just loves to bargain with them for peas, apples, tomatoes, or whatever. When they come back with their red marbles, and they always do, he decides he doesn't like red after all and he sends them home with a bag of produce for a green marble or an orange one, when they come on their next trip to the store.' I left the store smiling to myself, impressed with this man. A short time later I moved to Colorado , but I never forgot the story of this man, the boys, and their bartering for marbles. Several years went by, each more rapid than the previous one. Just recently I had occasion to visit some old friends in that Idaho community and while I was there learned that Mr. Miller had died. They were having his visitation that evening and knowing my friends wanted to go, I agreed to accompany them. Upon arrival at the mortuary we fell into line to meet the relatives of the deceased and to offer whatever words of comfort we could. Ahead of us in line were three young men. One was in an army uniform and the other two wore nice haircuts, dark suits and white shirts...all very professional looking. They approached Mrs. Miller, standing composed and smiling by her husband's casket. Each of the young men hugged her, kissed her on the cheek, spoke briefly with her and moved on to the casket. Her misty light blue eyes followed them as, one by one, each young man stopped briefly and placed his own warm hand over the cold pale hand in the casket. Each left the mortuary awkwardly, wiping his eyes. Our turn came to meet Mrs. Miller. I told her who I was and reminded her of the story from those many years ago and what she had told me about her husband's bartering for marbles With her eyes glistening, she took my hand and led me to the casket. 'Those three young men who just left were the boys I told you about. They just told me how they appreciated the things Jim 'traded' them. Now, at last, when Jim could not change his mind about color or size....they came to pay their debt.' 'We've never had a great deal of the wealth of this world,' she confided, 'but right now, Jim would consider himself the richest man in Idaho '. With loving gentleness she lifted the lifeless fingers of her deceased husband. Resting underneath were three exquisitely shined red marbles.
The Moral : We will not be remembered by our words, but by our kind deeds. Life is not measured by the breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath.

The seven thirty mine

we all went hiking today. this mine site is at a nearby town. The story goes that a man named Heneage Griffin owned the seven thiry mine. so named because unlike other mines that started work at 6:30 am - he started his an hour later. Griffin's fiancee was found dead in his room the night before their wedding! He was a reclusive person and joined the Colo. gold rush living not in town but up on the mountain near his mine. he was an accomplished violinist so he often played from sunset to dark to the delight of the towns people below. they would stay outside and listen an applaud at the conclusion. On June 10 1887, the audience heard his final note followed by a gunshot. The miners walked up the steep trail to his home to find Griffin lying in a crude rock hewn tomb of his own digging. A suicide note asked that he be buried here. his brother put up this monument.

I think this is where people bring them when the kids git tired of them and the parents don't want to clean the bowls once the county fairs are gone on to the next town.

'shroom

out picking the last of the rasberries today. found this cute little mushroom in the moss... thinking of all the childhood stories about fairies and the like... then T stepped on it. Hmm, hope no fairies were sitting on it. they'll send the misquitos after us as revenge!

Chicago Creek

out playing with my new camera! Whoo hoo, I finally have the manual settings figured out enough to get the "feathered effect" on waterfalls. Some may think no big deal, it's easy to do. Well, with digital it is easier to experiment. no wasted film!
