Hmm...makes me think of a (don't worry, it's clean) tomatillo a bit, but that has a leafy skin that peels I think. I'm trying to think what is native to your area. Is it growing off a yucca plant? Do you know what it is?

it's a cantalope that didn't quite make it in time before the first snow came and killed it.
